  • All Pufferfish share one characteristic, the ability to puff up, which is what gives them their name. Pufferfish can inflate into a ball shape to evade predators. Also known as blowfish, these clumsy swimmers fill their elastic stomachs with huge amounts of water (and sometimes air) and blow themselves up to several times their normal size. Some pufferfish species also have spines on their skin to ward off predators.
  • Freshwater puffers do best at a pH between 7.0 and 7.6, with a temperature between 74° and 78° F.
  • As these fish tend to be more aggressive, it's best to keep them in an aquarium by themselves with no other pufferfish. Though they rarely reach 2 inches, they need a large tank because they produce a lot of waste. We recommend an aquarium at least 32 inches long.
  • The diet of the pufferfish includes mostly invertebrates and algae. Large specimens will even crack open and eat clams, mussels, and shellfish with their hard beaks.
