Swordtail Red fish are a wonderful and popular freshwater fishes in the aquarium community.

These fishes are a great choice to be added in the aquarium because of their beauty and low-maintenance nature even for beginners.

Fishes

Swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri) originated from North and Central America. They belong to the Poeciliidae family and are closely related to other common fish like the platy and guppy.

Fresh water fishes

Like most other fishes, these fresh water fishes are live-bearers that use internal fertilization and give birth to live young ones instead of laying eggs.

Swordtails do best living in a group, so at least 4-5 individuals can be kept in the aquarium.

Some tankmates include Neon Tetras, Coolie Loach or Corydoras.

Ornamental fishes

These ornamental fishes are omnivores. They do well on most community micropelleted diets, and also enjoy occasional frozen and freeze-dried foods.

Aquarium fishes

These fishes are active swimmers so extra space is required in the aquarium. Larger tanks are always better for groups or if you’re planning on keeping a bunch of community fish together.

In order to replicate their natural environment, Substrate for Tank bottom & rocks can be used to create hiding places. Add larger rock caves or driftwood which will provide shelter to them.

Some plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and dwarf hairgrass can be included in the aquarium. The tank must be covered with a lid to protect the fish form jumping out of the tank.

Medium Sized Fishes

The average lifespan is around three to five years. The size is around 5.5 inches in length when fully grown. Males are smaller than females.

Colour fishes

The color of the body is red with a mix of bars and stripes.

Swordtail as their name suggests, the lower lobe of the male’s caudal or tail fin is elongated, creating a sword-like protrusion that can be just as long as the rest of the body. The female caudal fin has no such protrusion.
