Cyprinid fishes

Tinfoil is a large growing but peaceful cyprinid fish. These fishes are popular in the aquarium despite of its very large size. Their striking appearance and playful behavior make them a thrill to watch and care for.

Fishes

The tinfoil barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) is a tropical Southeast Asian freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae. 

Fresh water fishes

These fresh water fishes are omnivorous. A high quality flake food can be given every day. Also some live food treats like worms or shrimps and Vegetable substitutes suggested for these fish in the aquarium are algae wafers and spinach.

Ornamental fishes

These ornamental fishes are very unassertive and will get along with almost any aquarium inhabitant.

Large and non-aggressive fish like bala sharks work best, although smaller schooling species are also kept with tinfoil barbs. Oscars and other non-aggressive cichlids are commonly kept.

But you should always remember that tinfoil barbs may nip at fins that are flashy and flowing, especially if the fish is slow-moving. For this reason, angelfish may not be a suitable tank mate.

Aquarium fishes

They are kept in school of 5 or more of their own kind in a very large tank to feel comfortable.

As to replicate their natural habitat of flowing rivers and streams, power heads can be used to create currents, a substrate of sand or gravel with scattered smooth rocks and pebbles can be included in the aquarium. Add some large pieces of driftwood and firmly anchored plants into it. The water must be kept clean. 20 to 25% of water should be replaced weekly. An algae magnet can be used to get rid of algae. . An external canister filter is needed to keep the tank clean and will aid in maintaining high levels of oxygenation and water flow. These fishes will jump out of the tank, so it should be covered with lid.

Large sized Fishes

They grow up to 14 inches (35 cm) in length. Tinfoil barbs have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

Color fishes

Their body is silver in color. It has large, silvery scales reminiscent of tinfoil due to their color and a metallic sheen. Also, like tinfoil, its scales will reflect light as it swims around the aquarium.

The dorsal fin is red with a black blotch at the tip and caudal fin orange or blood-red, red pectoral, pelvic and anal fins, red caudal fin with white margin and a black sub marginal stripe along each lobe, and 8 scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line.
