Cyprinid fishes

The lion head gold is a hooded variety of fancy goldfish. This fish is the ancestor to the ranchu gold fish. They have gained the attention of aquarists all over the world because of its unique appearance, beautiful colors, peaceful nature and ease of care.

Fishes

The Lion head Goldfish (Carassius auratus) belongs to Cyprinidae family are first bred in China, and it quickly spread throughout the world.

Fresh water fishes

They are considered as community fish and they’re known to be very peaceful. They can get along great with any other peaceful community fish in the aquarium. Many of the goldfish varieties, such as the Common Goldfish, Comet Goldfish, and the Shubunkin, are not good tank mates for the Lion head Goldfish because they are fast swimmers and too competitive during feeding time. Better tank mates would be the similarly handicapped like Water-Bubble Eye Goldfish, Telescope Goldfish, and Celestial Goldfish. Lion head should be kept with other slow-moving varieties, so that these fishes will get plenty to eat and do well.

Ornamental fishes

They are omnivores. They generally eat almost anything. They can survive on fish flakes alone. But for optimal health they need variety in their diets. You can feed your fish with fish brine shrimp, small pieces of cooked meat such as chicken, and pieces of fruit and vegetables regularly.

Aquarium fishes

They will require an aquarium of minimum 20 gallons for a single Lion head Goldfish, though a larger space is always beneficial. Each additional fish requires 10 gallons more space. If you plan on housing a community, you’ll want a tank that is at least 50 gallons. You will need heater to maintain the temperature of water the aquarium.

Quick Aquarium Care:

Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons.

Water temperature: 65°F to 75°F

pH levels: 6.5 to 7.5

Water hardness: 5 to 19 dGH

Add a smooth stones or sand substrate or else you can keep the bottom of the tanks bare. You should avoid any sharp or abrasive decor items in the tank because their wens are susceptible to infection and injury. Also don’t add a drift wood and rock. You can add some plants. They might nibble on them. Lightning is needed if you have plants in the tank. Otherwise, these fishes do well in a brightly-lit or dimly-lit environment. You will need a powerful filter to ensure their water is always free of contaminants.

Small Fishes

Lion heads can grow up to 6 to 8 inches in length. The life span is up to 15 years.

Color fishes

Lion head goldfish have rounded bodies that are almost egg-shaped and come in a range of colors. They are most commonly bred in red and orange but are also available in blue, black, calico, and tri-colored. They have metallic, nacreous or matte scales.

They look different from a common goldfish, because of their round, egg-shaped bodies, and the complete lack of a stabilizing dorsal fin.

Lion heads have a double caudal (tail) fin and a double anal fin.

The hood or head growth and fat cheeks of lion heads is meant to mimic the Chinese lion dogs, hence the fish's common name. The "wen" or head growth fully covers the head, cheeks and gill plates of the fish. This can even start to block the fish’s vision, resulting in a poor swimming fish that can’t see well. The wen is a bumpy growth with a texture similar to a raspberry.

They are often mistaken for an Oranda Goldfish. These fish do look similar, but it’s easy to differentiate them because Lionhead Goldfish lack a dorsal fin while Orandas have one.
