Tetra fishes

The Texas is pearly iridescent cichlid fish which can grow to a large size in your aquarium, so it should be kept in larger tanks. This sparkly and beautifully spotted fish is familiar for its aggressive behaviour.

Fishes

Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) belongs to cichlidae family also known as Pearl cichlid, Rio Grande cichlid, Rio Grande perch.

 Fresh water fishes

Texas cichlids are native to lakes and rivers in south Texas and northern Mexico.

Ornamental fishes

Texas cichlids are aggressive in nature so they should only be kept with other large species of fish that are capable of fending for them. Other large Central or South American cichlids are suitable tank mates, as are oscars, silver dollars, and tinfoil barbs.

The spawning pairs are highly aggressive. So they should not be kept with any other fish, as they are quite likely to kill any other fish in the tank and even their own species during this time.

 Aquarium fishes

In order to mimic their natural habitat a substrate of fine gravel or sand should be placed in the aquarium. Plenty of smooth rocks, bogwood, or driftwood can be included.

Sturdy plants fill out the habitat. Plant them so the roots are inaccessible, to prevent them from being uprooted. Floating plants are also a good option. Open spaces are needed, also some hiding spots. Large rocks and clay pots must be added in the aquarium.

The minimum tank size is 55 gallons for a single fish and 75 gallons for breeding purposes. When they are kept with other large fish, the tank should be 125 gallons or larger. Filtration should be strong, as this species is sensitive to organic waste. Perform weekly partial water changes to ensure water chemistry remains optimal.

Quick Aquarium care:

Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons.

Temperature: 68 to 75°F (20-24 C)

PH: 6.5 to 7.5

Water hardness: up to 12 dGH.

Large sized Fishes

The adult size of fish is 12 inches. The life span is 10+years.

Texas Cichlid

These cichlids are omnivorous and will eat anything including live, frozen, flake, and pelleted foods. Live foods can also be given such as worms and insects or insect larvae. Fresh vegetables and spirulina flakes or pellets can be fed to keep their natural colors bright and to maintain health.

Color fishes

The color of the body is pearl-gray with blue- to green-hued scales that give the appearance of pearly iridescent spots. The iridescent spots extend into the fins. A dark spot is clearly visible at the base of the tail, and several more spots or bars are in the center of the body.

However, males are usually brighter in color and iridescence, grow a few inches larger in size, Mature males develop the nuchal hump on the head above the eyes. During spawning, the fish assumes a striking half coloration, with the front portion of the body becoming white, and the rear and underbelly being black-and-gray barred.

It has also been observed that the fins of the males are longer and more pointed. One way to differentiate female specimens is by the black spots located on their dorsal fin that are absent in male specimens.
