Cyprinid fishes
The Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) belongs to cyprinid family. These fishes are very active swimmers, beautiful to watch and easy to care for.
Fishes
These fishes are naturally found throughout Southeast Asia, and they originate in Borneo, Indonesia, and Sumatra. They are also known as Sumatra Barb.
Some non-native populations are also distributed in other regions around the world.
Fresh water fishes
These Fresh water fishes are omnivores. A nutrient-rich flakes or pellets will serve as the foundation of their diet. Live foods such as brine shrimp, water fleas, bloodworms, and even beef heart can be fed. Some vegetables such as lettuce, cucumbers, or zucchini are also an important diet for them.
Ornamental fishes
These ornamental fishes are considered to be semi-aggressive in nature. They might nip at the fins of slow-moving tank mates as well. They can also have an aggression within their group.
To minimize their aggressive behaviour, you must keep them in a group of at least six. If you have a larger tank, you can keep as many as 12 together.
You should choose fast-swimming fish of a similar size as their tank mates such as Rosy Barb,
Cherry Barb, Cory Catfish, Most Types Of Plecos, Clown Loach, Tinfoil Barb, Pictus Catfish, and Neon Tetra.
Aquarium fishes
In order to mimic their natural habitat (lakes, streams) a fine gravel substrate mixed with some large rocks and cobblestones should be placed in the aquarium.
Add some submerged plants like Java Fern and Water Wisteria which will provide some shelter and produce algae that the Tiger Barb can eat. Also add some driftwood and rock caves to give the aquarium a natural look.
A standard lighting can be placed in the aquarium. A robust filtration system is needed to keep the water nice and clean. Tiger Barbs are known to jump out of the tank so it should be covered with a lid.
Quick Aquarium Care:
Minimum Tank Size: At least 20 gallons.
Water temperature: 68°F to 82°F degrees (aim for around 74°F if possible)
pH levels: 6.0 to 8.0 (a slightly acidic 6.5 is best)
Water hardness: 4 to 10 dKH
To maintain the ideal water parameters in the aquarium you should use a water test kit.
Small Fishes
The average lifespan is between five and seven years. This small Tiger Barb will reach about two and a half inches long.
Color Fishes
The color of the body is golden yellow with four vertical black stripes and red fins and snout.
The dorsal, anal, caudal fins have red edging and the pectoral and pelvic fins are fully red. Female fishes are larger and heavier. They have a broader shape and a rounder belly. Male fishes are smaller.
